Homeschool: Veteran's Day : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

Sunday was Veteran?s Day (which the country observes today) that day in which we celebrate all?Veteran?s?from our Armed Services. The ways in which to celebrate this day in your homeschool class are endless. It is completely up to you. Since I am a military brat and we live near one of the largest military bases in the country we attend Veteran?s Day?festivities?there. One year we even took a trip to Washington DC to see the Vietnam Memorial.

A few suggestions for your lesson plans are:

  1. Discuss each war briefly. Talk about each war briefly discussing who fought for what side, who won, how they won, etc
  2. Watch war movies. While these may be inappropriate for younger children there are dozens of classic war movies that be watched.
  3. Learn about each branch of the service. Your local recruiting office will gladly supply you materials that you can use while you discuss each branch of service. Children will find things interesting such as the red stripe down the side of a Marine?s uniform is their way of honoring those who have shed their blood in service or that Army Rangers ?Never ?leave a man behind.? Things like that recruiters will share with you and you can create a whole lesson around it.
