Google maps out North Korea with crowd-sourced data

20 hrs.

While Google Maps feels like a solid mapping solution, it has some blank spots?? ?particularly when it comes to regions such as?North Korea. But that's all changing thanks to a group of "citizen cartographers" and a tool which allows Google to incorporate crowd-sourced map data into its product.

As?Jayanth Mysore, a senior product manager working on the Google Map Maker project,?explains in a post on the official Google Maps blog, the Map Maker tool?has been around since 2008 and allowed users to "update the maps of the areas they know, and improve their level of detail and accuracy." Crowdsourced data like this is how Google "will build the modern map," Mysore adds, reiterating that without these details, map data is currently "very limited" in some parts of the world.

Efforts to map out North Korea have been made over the last few years, but on Monday, Google was finally ready to officially update the region on Google Maps. "We know this map is not perfect," Mysore acknowledges. "We encourage people from around the world to continue helping us improve the quality of these maps for everyone with Google Map Maker." He adds that, from now on, any further "approved" updates to the North Korean maps will also appear on Google Maps.

The Wall Street Journal's Evan Ramstad points out?that the update of North Korea on Google Maps comes about three weeks after Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt visited the area (though a Google spokesperson tells NBC News that the visit was unrelated to the timing of the Google Maps update).?During his time in the country, "Schmidt encouraged officials he met in North Korea to make the Internet available to its citizens and end its attempts to restrict information," Ramstad writes.?The Verge's Sam Byford reminds?that Internet access in North Korea remains quite restricted nonetheless, and that odds are that the "vast majority of North Korean citizens" won't be able to access Google's freshly updated maps.

The crowd-sourced cartography includes mass transit, monuments and parks, as well as North Korea's massive gulags, which are signified on Google Maps with a slightly different shading. ?As?the Atlantic notes, "Naturally, the Hwasong Gulag, like any place on Google, already has some jokesters reviewing its?accommodations."?

Mysore dances around these detail in his blog post, and instead focuses on who will be able to take advantage of the information. "While many people around the globe are fascinated with North Korea," he writes, "these maps are especially important for the citizens of South Korea who have ancestral connections or still have family living there."

Rome's Trevi Fountain gets $2.9 million facelift

ROME (AP) ? Rome's 18th-century Trevi Fountain, famed as a setting for the film "La Dolce Vita," is getting a ?2.18 million ($2.9 million) restoration courtesy of the Fendi fashion house.

The 20-month project on one of the city's most iconic fountains was unveiled at a city hall press conference Monday featuring Fendi designers Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi, who said the project combined a love of Rome's past with a need to preserve its future.

Rome's fountains, Lagerfeld said, "are there to glorify water, which is the most important thing in life."

It's the latest example of Italian fashion companies coming to the aid of Italy's chronically underfunded cultural heritage. The founder of the Tod's footwear company is footing the bill for the ?25 million (nearly $34 million) restoration of Rome's ancient Colosseum, and Mayor Gianni Alemanno said he hoped these two donations were just the start.

"Without similar initiatives, we won't be able to save the cultural memory of our country," Alemanno said.

Fendi is also donating ?320,000 ($430,000) to restore another fountain complex in Rome, the Quattro Fontane.

The landmark Trevi Fountain is a must-see on any tourist itinerary. It was famously featured in Federico Fellini's 1960 movie "La Dolce Vita," with Anita Ekberg seductively splashing in the fountain's waters and calling out to leading man Marcello Mastroianni.

Many visitors flip a coin into the fountain: Tradition says that doing so ensures a prompt return to the Eternal City.

The Trevi restoration involves a complete overhaul of the fountain, including cleaning the travertine fa?ade and marble statues, replacing the gilded Latin inscriptions and re-waterproofing the main basin. The project will be carried out in phases, with the central section restored first, then the sides, then the top. At no time will it be closed to visitors, and officials said a screen bearing the image of the fountain will cover the scaffolding in a bid to minimize the eyesore for camera-toting tourists.

The restoration is expected to completed by 2015.

The fountain, which was built between 1732 and 1762, features Oceanus being carried on his chariots and contains many other allegorical references to water. The location of the fountain itself ? on a side street off central Rome's main thoroughfare ? is the termination of one of ancient Rome's aqueducts, the Aqua Virgo Aqueduct.

Alemanno stressed that the only reference to Fendi's sponsorship will be a small plaque near the fountain identifying Fendi as responsible.

Silvia Venturini Fendi said the firm, which her family founded in 1925 in Rome, wanted to give something back to the city and noted that she and her sisters had previously published a book on Roman fountains.

"For Romans, water is inspiration," she said.

Massive sinkhole in China swallows building

Look out, below. A massive sinkhole in Guangzhou, China, swallowed up buildings and knocked out power to thousands of residents.

According to Shanghaiist, the sinkhole is about 3,230 square feet and plenty deep. A video shows a crowd milling about the sinkhole before it expanded, causing a building to crumble as if it were detonated.

Neighboring buildings were evacuated and streets were blocked by police. "Gas could be smelt from over 30 metres away, and deafening noises could be heard as the land continued to crack and sink," the Shanghaiist reports.

Sinkholes are, unfortunately, nothing new. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, some sinkholes are human-induced. "New sinkholes have been correlated to land-use practices, especially from groundwater pumping and from construction and development practices." They also occur in areas where the rock beneath the land surface can be easily dissolved by groundwater.

Human-induced or not, sinkholes are getting a lot of press these days. In China's Guangxi province last year, a sinkhole formed after a local school dug a well to ease its water shortage. Business Insider reports that in Beijing, massive bomb shelters, "constructed amid fears of an impending nuclear attack during the height of Chinese-Soviet tensions," may be contributing to the problem.

But they certainly aren't limited to China. In 2011, a Florida sinkhole gobbled up "a garbage bin, an oak tree, the back wall of the building housing a salon and racks of supplies." A woman in Guatemala City discovered a?3-feet-wide, 40-feet-deep sinkhole beneath her bed. And in Ohio, a massive sinkhole caused part of a state highway to collapse.

Brazil club blaze survivor: 'An angel saved my life'

By Keir Simmons and Laura Saravia, NBC News

SANTA MARIA, Brazil -- At 2 a.m. on Rua Dos Andradas, a crowd of young people stands in silence. There is nothing to say.

Keir Simmons / NBC News

Mourners stand outside the Kiss nightclub in the early hours of Tuesday, two nights after a devastating fire killed at least 230 clubbers.

Two nights ago, on this same street, at this same time, a tragedy unfolded that is hard to comprehend.?

Outside the Kiss nightclub, where a blaze and its panicked aftermath claimed the lives of at least 230 partygoers ? most of them students at the local university ? the smell of smoke lingers in the air.

Now it has become a place to mourn and remember.

Among the survivors is Adreen Righi, 20, who is still trying to make sense of how the disaster unfolded.

?I was dancing with my friends,? she says, recovering at home. ?People started pushing. I looked at the stage and there was smoke.?

Pushed over in the panic, she was trampled to the ground but still found air. ?Breathe, breathe, come on now breathe,? she told herself as others climbed over her.

Then, she recalls, ?an angel saved my life.? A woman she didn't know pushed her outside, to safety.

In the fresh air, she hugged her friends. But some were missing.

Her classmate, Juliano, had gone to the bathroom 15 minutes before the fire. She will never see him again.

?He was a good person,? she says, ?always smiling. Making jokes. He was a good guy.?

She is ?very happy? to be alive, but adds: ?I can't explain how I feel about my friends, about the city.?

Santa Maria is in mourning, but there is also growing anger.

Investigators must now seek answers to the questions being asked here: Why did the nightclub apparently have only one exit? Why did fire extinguishers not work, as some witnesses have reported? Why did security staff briefly block exits to stop people leaving without paying their drinks tabs?

Keir Simmons / NBC News

'No justification ? 231 murdered'. A sign posted outside the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria.

On the street outside the nightclub, a hand-made poster says: ?Nada justifica, 231 assassinatos' ? meaning ?No justification ? 231 murdered?.

The final death toll is still unclear, but the message is stark.?

Globo television said 53 seriously-injured victims remain in Porto Alegre, state capital of Rio Grande do Sul,where a support unit has also been set up with psychologists to help relatives of victims.

Police officials said four people are still under temporary arrest over the disaster. Local media reports on Monday said those detained were two owners of the Kiss club and two members of a band whose pyrotechnic display is thought to have set light to the club's sound-proofed ceiling. None of the arrests imply any criminal accusation, police said.

Protesters marched through the town late Monday, carrying flowers, balloons and placards with the names of the victims, according to Globo, which reported that as many as 30,000 took part.

Among them, Eglon Do Canto told The Associated Press: "We hope that the justice system, through its competent mechanisms, succeeds in clarifying to the public what happened, and gives the people an explanation."

Edgar Zuniga Jr, NBC News in Atlanta, contributed to this report.

3D printing and NFC make a great looking Nexus 4 dock

Nexus 4 dock

We're all waiting for someone to sell that fancy orb docking station for the Nexus 4. In the meantime, ingenuity never rests and this 3D printed dock would make an awesome substitute. It uses a standard USB cable for charging, and an NFC sticker to trigger the NFC Task Launcher app to drop it into dock mode.

If you have access to a 3D printer, be sure to give this one a good look. And if you make any extra ones, give me a yell so I can throw my money at you.

UFC on Fox 6 results: Demetrious Johnson retains title, ?Rampage? loses in Octagon finale

CHICAGO -- The UFC's stop in the Windy City had two great knockouts, a champion holding onto his belt, and the last fight of a one-time champ.

Despite a strong start by John Dodson, Demetrious Johnson held onto his championship belt with a unanimous decision. The judges saw it 48-47, 49-46, 48-47 for Johnson.

Unsurprisingly, Johnson and Dodson fought a fast-paced first two rounds. Johnson tried to slow things down in the first round with a takedown. While he did get Dodson to to the ground, the challenger popped back to his feet quickly.

Dodson dropped Johnson twice in the second round, and shook off Johnson's take down attempts with a great sprawl. Johnson seemed to have a hard time even getting close to Dodson to land a punch.

[Related: T.J. Grant and Ryan Bader shine at UFC on Fox 6]

A Johnson knee in the fourth round caused a small fight stoppage. Dodson's hand was on the ground as Johnson threw a knee to Dodson's head, which is an illegal strike. The bout was stopped as doctors checked Dodson's eye and Johnson was warned. The fight went on, but not without plenty of boos from the crowd in Chicago.

When the fight restarted, it was all Johnson. He controlled Dodson against the cage, and threw knees that busted up Dodson's face. Johnson was able to get a takedown at the beginning of the fifth round, too. Though boos rained down, Johnson kept the fight against the cage.

Later, the crowd got behind him as Johnson elevated, tightened his legs around Dodson's torso and threw elbows. It was a creative move that likely could only happen in the flyweight division. Johnson finished the round with Dodson against the cage, and knee after knee after knee to the body and face.

Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson vs. Glover Teixeira

If this really was Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's last fight in the UFC, it wasn't one to remember. He was outstruck and outwrestled by Glover Teixeira throughout their bout. Teixeira took the fight 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 on the judges' cards.

Teixeira's first round was his best, as he was able to take Jackson down early and mount him and take his back. Late in the round, Teixeira knocked Jackson down with a punch and looked close to finishing, but wasn't able to end the fight.

The rest of the fight featured a worn out Jackson trying to avoid Teixeira's takedown attempts unsuccessfully. Jackson threw some big punches, and even jawed at Teixeira during the bout, but he wasn't able to score any big offense.

While this fight will be remembered for being Jackson's last UFC bout, Teixeira scored his third straight UFC win on Saturday night. He looked impressive against the former champ.

Anthony Pettis vs. Donald Cerrone

Anthony Pettis won his much anticipated bout with Donald Cerrone by landing big, memorable strikes. Pettis was getting the better of their striking exchanges early, which set him up for a big finish. Pettis threw a kick that landed hard on Cerrone's body, then finished with a punch. Cerrone fell to the ground in a heap, and the fight was stopped at 2:35 in the first round.

Pettis lost his first fight in the UFC after coming from the WEC as the champ, but he's been winning ever since. He has wins over Joe Lauzon, Jeremy Stephens and now Cerrone. After the fight, he made a pitch to UFC president Dana White.

"I want my title shot. I should have had it years ago. People say I can?t wrestle because of the Guida fight, but I had a serious shoulder injury. Now I am 100 percent. No one can do in the Octagon what I can do."

While lightweight champion Benson Henderson has a fight set up with Gilbert Melendez, a shot for Pettis isn't unwarranted. It would be a rematch of their WEC title fight, which Pettis won in the promotion's final fight.

Ricardo Lamas vs. Erik Koch

Lamas won the first round by constantly pressuring Koch against the cage. It wasn't exactly the most thrilling round to have start a card on network television, but it led to a thrilling second round. Lamas took advantage of Koch's slip, and then finished the fight with nasty, nasty ground and pound. Lamas started with elbows, then started with strikes that cut open Koch's face. Koch had no answer for Lamas' relentless strikes, and the bout was stopped at 2:32 in the second round.

Lamas thought his performance warranted a title shot.

"I?ve beat Cub Swanson, I?ve beat Hioki and now I?ve beat Koch. All those guys were supposed to be fighting for the title at one point. I beat them all. We?re all here to be world champ and I am no different. I want the winner of Aldo vs Edgar next week. I don?t care who wins, I want the winner."

McCain: Immigration plan to have pathway to citizenship

Two senators at the center of negotiations over comprehensive immigration reform, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) said on Sunday that a pathway to citizenship is an essential component of a comprehensive reform bill.

"That has to be also part of it," McCain told ABC News' Martha Raddatz on "This Week" when asked whether a pathway to citizenship would be a component of reform. "There's a new appreciation on both sides of the aisle including, maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle, that we have to enact comprehensive immigration reform."

Like "This Week" on Facebook here. You can also follow the show on Twitter here.

McCain said that a small group of Senators will release the principles of a comprehensive, not "piecemeal," reform bill this week.

"I'm very pleased with the progress," McCain said. "It's not that much different from what we tried to do in 2007."

Read a full transcript of the interview with Sens. McCain and Menendez HERE.

Menendez, who met with President Obama on Friday along with other members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus leadership, said that the president expressed his full commitment to reform.

"The president made it very clear in that discussion that this was a top legislative priority for him in this session of the Congress and that he expects to work with all of us in an effort to achieve that goal and he's fully committed to it."

He added that a pathway to "earned legalization" is an "essential element" of an immigration reform bill.

"First, Americans support it in poll after poll. Secondly, Latino voters expect it. Thirdly Democrats want it. And fourth Republicans need it," Menendez said.

McCain added that he believes Obama's use of the presidential podium on behalf of immigration reform at an event in Las Vegas planned for Tuesday will aid efforts to pass a bill.

"I think it helps," McCain said. "I think its important that we all work together on this."

"Believe it or not, I see a glimmer of bipartisanship out there," he added.

Super Bowl commercial shocker: Sex sells

The Parents' Television Council is outraged over a Mercedes Benz Super Bowl ad featuring model Kate Upton that they say reinforces the notion of using sex appeal to get what you want. The video has attracted nearly 3 million views on YouTube in only two days.

The news this week that a watchdog group was criticizing a sexy Super Bowl ad had some readers grumbling ? about the quality of the ad.

The Parents Television Council raised a red flag over a Mercedes Benz ad showing Kate Upton using sex appeal to get a group of guys to wash her car. The ad has already been viewed online millions of times.

Some readers raised a red flag about the ad, too, but not because it was inappropriate. They just thought it wasn?t that good.

??Boring commercial. Girl is attractive, but music is annoying,? one reader wrote.

Others just said the ad wasn?t very original.

?I'm amazed no one ever thought of using sex to sell something before. Brilliant marketing,? another wrote - sarcastically, we assume.

Still, most readers said they wouldn?t have a problem with the ad airing during the Super Bowl, with many noting that there have been plenty of racy ads in years past

About three-fourths of the nearly 10,000 people who took our poll said they didn?t think the ad was inappropriate for the Super Bowl.

Those who said the ad was inappropriate argued that it?s a bad message to be sending young women.

?It's getting harder and harder to raise confident young girls when all they see that is valued in women is their looks,? one reader noted.

Should I break up the relationship if he is checking ... - Marriage Right

Q: My fianc? always checks out girls while I am with him. Not every girl but when it happens, I feel like I am disappearing and very insulted. Should I break up the relationship?

A:?The choice to break up the relationship depends on how he responds when you talk to him about this issue. He may not be aware of how deeply this is hurting you or how this could be detrimental to the marriage later on. It needs to be processed between the two of you in conversation. If he responds positively to your concerns and changes his behavior, then he?s learning and there?s no reason to break of the relationship over this issue. If, however, he tells you that you should not be insulted and that every man does that, then it could be grounds for breaking up the relationship.

Before you get married, I think you want to make sure that you look at as many issues as you can and find agreement on them. Here?s one you haven?t yet found agreement on, so discuss it with each other. If the two of you can?t solve it, and you really value the relationship, then sit down with a counselor and let a person who has been trained to deal with these types of things help you work through this conflict.

So reach out for help, seek a solution and find a resolution before you move on toward marriage.

AP Exclusive: possible USAID bid rigging probed

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Justice Department is conducting a criminal investigation into possible contract rigging by the general counsel at the government agency that distributes foreign aid, documents obtained by The Associated Press show.

Memos from the inspector general of the U.S. Agency for International Development also reveal that the IG is investigating whether Deputy Administrator Donald Steinberg tried to interfere with an internal investigation.

Internal inspector general documents said he told the IG's office it shouldn't have investigated the alleged rigging, nor should the matter have been referred to the Justice Department.

Inspectors general are watchdogs within a federal agency and are supposed to operate independently.

The original investigation focused on whether Lisa Gomer, USAID general counsel, may have "wired" a contract last May so the winner of the solicitation would be the agency's retiring chief financial officer, David Ostermeyer.

The contract bidding for a "senior government-to-government assistance adviser" was canceled after questions were raised.

"If the solicitation was in fact designed for Ostermeyer to win, Ms. Gomer and USAID may have violated various federal laws, the Federal Acquisition Regulation and government ethics policies," according to a letter from two House members to USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah in November.

The letter was written by Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, chairman of the panel's national security subcommittee.

On Wednesday, the inspector general's office wrote Issa's committee saying the Justice Department authorized the inspector general to give the committee documents related to Steinberg's potential interference. The Justice Department said it would continue to investigate the original allegations. All the documents were described as "law enforcement sensitive."

One document said Steinberg told inspector general officials that Shah asked him to speak with the internal investigators about the review. Steinberg, according to another inspector general document, ripped into the independent watchdog.

"When people are slapping badges down, reading rights and monitoring who is calling who as it relates to career people, it is a mistake," Steinberg was quoted as telling his agency's investigators. Steinberg added, according to the document, "We are not that kind of agency. People are being told they need to hire lawyers and that is inappropriate."

The memo also quoted Steinberg as saying "now that Justice is involved, it is like the IG is out to get these people. Justice is going to proceed criminally. This should have come through the front office first."

The law governing inspectors general says that the internal investigators "shall report expeditiously to the attorney general whenever the inspector general has reasonable grounds to believe there has been a violation of Federal criminal law."

There was no response to a message requesting comment, left on the home answering machine of a David Ostermeyer.

Steinberg declined to comment, and Gomer could not immediately be reached for comment.

A senior USAID official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on the subject, said Gomer has been reassigned from her general counsel's position and has submitted her resignation effective Feb. 9. The official said she was not ordered to resign.

The USAID spokesman, Kamyl Bazbaz said, "We take very seriously the independence of the inspector general and the importance of the agency's cooperation with IG audits and investigations."

He added, "It is the usual practice for the IG to brief the senior leadership of the agency regarding its ongoing investigations and audits."

In an inspector general's "memorandum of interview" last June, investigators described their probe into allegations that "Lisa Gomer, general counsel for USAID colluded with David Ostermeyer, chief financial officer for USAID, by working with him to write a scope of work for a personal service contract ... in the Office of General Counsel."

"Gomer planned to select Ostermeyer for the position," the memo said.

The job Ostermeyer would have received in working with foreign governments would have paid between $123,758 and $155,500, according the USAID solicitation document. The solicitation said "the work is generally sedentary and does not pose undue physical demands," an important factor in an agency where USAID workers can live in poor conditions in dangerous countries.

According to an inspector general's document from last June, Steinberg said he "had already looked into this matter thoroughly and knows there is nothing to it." Steinberg said the contract award was canceled because of issues raised about the procurement.

"He said it is a mistake to have a criminal investigation under way," the investigative document said. "To take a matter to the Department of Justice for criminal consideration without first reporting the issues to the front office is inappropriate and a judgment error on the IG's part."

According to the document the deputy assistant inspector general for investigations, Lisa McClennon, told Steinberg "the agency never has the right to instruct the inspector general's office on whether or not something is presented to Justice."

Issa said in a statement, "This interference by the top USAID official and his deputy in a corruption investigation of other top officials is disturbing and outrageous. Inspectors general can only be effective if they are independent. Efforts to intimidate or chastise an inspector general for investigating agency corruption and submitting findings to the Justice Department are simply incompatible with honest government."

College Football Has Not Peaked, It Needs to Develop Fully And ...

College football?s major conferences have seen television revenue surge. This rise, though, has corresponded with declines, in both attendance and ratings. Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports wonders whether this is fatigue with the over-expansion and monetization of the sport. He asks whether college football has peaked and cautions against further change.

We disagree with this assessment. College football has not peaked. It has not reached its full maturity. Far from changing too much in the modern media climate, the sport?s hidebound culture has hindered it from adapting enough.

Football is a better television product. It can be terrible live in stadium. Tickets are expensive. Field views are imperfect. Fans spend four hours watching mostly suspended animation. It can be a battle against boredom, dehydration and the elements. Large HD flat-screens are affordable. More games are shown. More devices can show them. Television is where the money is and where the future fans will be. No lament will alter this balance. If college football is flagging on television, that should not surprise. The sport has not optimized itself for it.

The NFL was built through decades of stability, concerted effort and sound business strategy. College football stumbled ass backward into becoming a multi-billion dollar industry. It rose to its present heights because ESPN, Nike and other corporations recognized untapped potential in the 1990s and wrote progressively larger checks. The sport?s convoluted, decentralized power structure does not encourage growth. Often, it actively undermines it.

Look at the playoff. It took 15 years of BCS controversy and strife, countless arguments and months of negotiation to add one game to the postseason. One game! Nearly everyone felt this game was an improvement. The benefits were obvious: it will more than triple the sport?s postseason revenue. Even then, the change was bitter and glacial.

Conference commissioners, moreover, have seen the future. They realize an eight-team playoff would be fairer, more rational and more popular. They recognize it would more than double the expanded postseason revenue from the four-team playoff. Their response to this vision: throwing in as many roadblocks to implementing it as possible.

Schools could have created their own postseason system that would have been sensible, compelling and earned them all the money. Instead, they farmed it out again distributing hundreds of millions to demonstrably corrupt bowl committees. Did Jim Delany fight for home playoff games that would have given Big Ten teams a better chance to win? No, he fought to keep the Rose Bowl relevant.

The postseason is not as good of a product as it could be. The same is true of the regular season. Conferences have billions riding on having enticing football television inventory, yet exert no control over non-conference scheduling. It is left to athletic directors and coaches. Not surprisingly, schedules benefit athletic directors and coaches.

Home games generate the most revenue and are easier to win. Consequently, big teams play almost every non-conference game at home. Bowl games let coaches and ADs claim progress and collect bonuses. Schedules make sure reaching a bowl game is as painless as possible. Resulting September slates are brutal, spilling over with fait accompli non-conference games. If ESPN did not engineer lucrative neutral site games and the SEC did not schedule a few early conference games, the first month of the season would feature almost no prime television inventory.

Regular season schedules are weaker than they could be. Even individual Saturdays are poorly planned. Conferences compete with one another. Each backloads its schedule for late afternoon and night games. The result is an insipid collection of noon games and the top four conferences each playing a prime game at the same time Saturday night. The games undercut each other. It?s no shock ratings are down.

Critics warn that college football may become too much like the NFL ??being competitive, popular and ridiculously profitable is a bad thing, apparently ??but it is this despised NFL that could provide a template for college football to enhance itself on television.

Rationing prime content is pivotal. ESPN pays $1.9 billion per season for Monday Night Football. That game has a concentrated audience. It does great cable ratings. That one game earns more than double the television rights fees paid to the SEC, the Big Ten, the Big 12 and the Pac 12 combined for an entire season. College football is missing an opportunity.

The sport is still in the warlord stage of political development. Pretend the big four conferences become partners instead of competitors. Those conferences merge their first-tier football rights during the next round of negotiations. They sell packages on the open market. They offer a Friday Night game, a Saturday Night game and two double afternoon packages on Saturday. The prime games are spread out between those packages.

Could networks afford not to get into the bidding? How much would FOX pay to have the best college football game of the week on Saturday night for an entire season with minimal competition? Maybe not $1.9 billion, but the packages combined should generate far more than each conference currently makes selling competing first-tier rights.

Moreover, if selling quality football games becomes the primary collective interest, it would improve the regular season. Big teams easing into September drags down everyone. This would lead to more inter-conference scheduling agreements and more big games during the regular season. That would help with attendance.

Tangible measures of college football?s popularity appear to be flatlining despite the increased revenue. That?s not a sign the sport has become too much of a business. It?s a sign the sport has not become enough of one. Corruption, muddled vision and decentralized power prevent the sport too often from acting in its own self-interest. College football caters to too many entrenched interest groups ahead of its fans. If that does not change, fans with far more entertainment avenues will start turning away.

Animation shows Arctic chill crawling across the U.S.

If you live anywhere within the northern two-thirds of the United States, you've probably noticed that it's pretty chilly outside. The plunge in temperatures over the past few days comes courtesy of an invasion of Arctic air that has been captured in a mesmerizing new animation from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The animation, made with weather data from the NOAA/NCEP Real-Time Mesoscale Analysis, begins on Saturday (Jan. 19) with very cold air seen only over the Rockies, Montana, North Dakota, the northern half of Minnesota and the northern portions of New England. Much of the eastern and central parts of the country saw weekend weather that was balmier than usual for mid-January.

Thanks to a kink in the jet stream that brought it dipping down, the cold air begins plunging southward on Sunday, mostly in the northern plains states and the Midwest. On Monday it begins to surge even farther to the south, covering the Plains, the Midwest, the Northeast and even extending into some of the southern states.

The cold surge retreats a bit later in the day, then makes another push on Tuesday, fully extending into the northern parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. The pattern repeats on Wednesday, with the cold receding much farther north later in the day, before making another southward push on Thursday.

All the back-and-forth is caused by diurnal cycle of heating and cooling, a NOAA statement explains, but "the pattern is clear: much of the U.S. is pretty cold," it notes.

The cold air is expected to retreat from the Midwest this weekend, letting warmer air force its way in, according to Accuweather.com. The collision of these air masses will bring an ice storm to the region, the site's meteorologists predict.

Snow and icy weather could hit the eastern United States starting tomorrow (Jan. 25), with temperatures finally rising above freezing over the weekend or early next week, depending on the location.

betfair shift ipoker evolution hits milestoneTwo weeks after Betfair Poker migrated away from the Ongame Network, the wheels have officially been set in motion for the poker arm of the world?s largest online betting exchange to shift its network provider to the iPoker Network. The online poker outfit recently made a successful debut on the iPoker Network, signaling the start of a shift in operations that will include a transitional period of six months wherein both networks will be available for existing players. The transitional period means that the poker arm of Betfair will operate on both the iPoker Network and the Ongame Network for the next six months with a gradual phasing out of operations on the latter, at which time, Betfair will solely operate on the iPoker Network in the summer.

For now, existing players will still be able to play on their old accounts for the next six months whereas new players will only be able to join Betfair Poker?s iPoker platform. As soon as the transition phase is completed, Betfair Poker, or as it?s calling itself now, ?New Betfair Poker? can now lay claim to belonging on iPoker?s Top Tier player pool, joining the likes of bet365 Poker, Paddy Power Poker, Titan Poker, William Hill, Winner, and Everest Poker in the fold.

Evolution Gaming hits milestone

Evolution Gaming has notched another feather in its cap with the launch of its 100th live casino at its Riga table studio complex in Latvia, effectively making it the largest single-site casino operation in Europe. No small achievement, whichever way you slice it. The rapid growth of Evolution?s live casino table comes in a year of what it describes as an ?unprecedented interest in live casino? stemming from a increased demand from operators to being dedicated live casino tables in their establishments. In particular, the company?s Latvia-based staff has experienced rapid growth, inching closer and closer to hitting 1,000 heads with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. ?We fully expect table and staff numbers to rise further as more and more operators choose to run their own dedicated tables out of our state-of-the-art studios,? said Evolution COO Svante Lilijevall.

While their 100th live casino table in Latvia is enough reason for the company to do high fives and chest bumps, Evolution is also taking the necessary steps to ensure that the continuous growth doesn?t experience any hiccups along the way. According to Lilijevall, the company is also expanding its training academy to provide regular training and assessments for both new and existing staff, ensuring that they have the best collection of live dealers working on their tables. After all, it takes more than just presentation for live dealers to work; these fine folks need to know what they?re doing too.

Researchers at the University of Granada, Spain, have designed a new computing system that determines the age and sex of a corpse with a reliability of 95%. This system is based on free software called Image and a free DICOM displayer called K-Pacs. This state-of-the-art system is very different from the traditional macroscopy systems used to evaluate the osteoarticular features of a corpse, and it is much faster and user-friendly.

The author of this study is Manuel Lpez Alcaraz, a researcher at the Forensic Anthropology Laboratory of the University of Granada, in collaboration with professors Miguel Botella Lpez, Inmaculada Alemn Aguilera and Pedro Manuel Garamendi Gonzlez.

The authors of the study examined 169 DICOM files (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine, the international standard for distributing medical images) of CT scans of patients between 17 and 90 years of age supplied by the Castile-La Mancha health service (SESCAM).

Histogram Analysis

The researchers examined the sagittal sections of the the articular surface of the pubic symphysis and the pubis itself, thus obtaining four sections: two sections of the right and left symphysis, and two sections of the pubis. Imaging techniques were used to analyze sections, histograms of the structures were obtained and the statistical variables of histograms were entered into the Image program to determine how histograms are related to age and sex.

"Age and sex are essential for the identification of corpses, and the pubis is especially relevant for this purpose. In our study, we exploited the great capacity of computer systems to discriminate between the different gray shades in a histogram (the human eye only can discriminate 64) to determine how histograms can provide information about age and sex", Lopez Alcaraz states. The researcher notes that this technique might be useful in virtopsies or virtual autopsies. "At present, the main drawback of virtual autopsy is that it cannot replace the macroscopic analysis of tissues for the identification of potential pathologies, determining whether an injury was inflicted before or after death, assessing the course of an injury...etc. As the new technique is based on image analysis, it can be applied to virtual autopsy to provide many more answers than traditional analysis methods.

The researcher affirms that this is a step forward in the field of Forensic Anthropology. "We should replace traditional osteological methods with new technologies and exploit the advantages of the visual communications and image era", the researcher states.

In addition, this study contradicts the traditional assumption in Forensic Anthropology that the pubis is only useful for the identification of corpses in the age range of 20 to 40 years. "We obtained excellent results in the identification of corpses of people older than 50 years, especially in men", the author notes.

Astrocytes identified as target for new depression therapy: Starry brain cells used to mimic sleep deprivation

Jan. 23, 2013 ? Neuroscience researchers from Tufts University have found that our star-shaped brain cells, called astrocytes, may be responsible for the rapid improvement in mood in depressed patients after acute sleep deprivation. This in vivo study, published in the current issue of Translational Psychiatry, identified how astrocytes regulate a neurotransmitter involved in sleep. The researchers report that the findings may help lead to the development of effective and fast-acting drugs to treat depression, particularly in psychiatric emergencies.

Drugs are widely used to treat depression, but often take weeks to work effectively. Sleep deprivation, however, has been shown to be effective immediately in approximately 60% of patients with major depressive disorders. Although widely-recognized as helpful, it is not always ideal because it can be uncomfortable for patients, and the effects are not long-lasting.

During the 1970s, research verified the effectiveness of acute sleep deprivation for treating depression, particularly deprivation of rapid eye movement sleep, but the underlying brain mechanisms were not known.

Most of what we understand of the brain has come from research on neurons, but another type of largely-ignored cell, called glia, are their partners. Although historically thought of as a support cell for neurons, the Phil Haydon group at Tufts University School of Medicine has shown in animal models that a type of glia, called astrocytes, affect behavior.

Haydon's team had established previously that astrocytes regulate responses to sleep deprivation by releasing neurotransmitters that regulate neurons. This regulation of neuronal activity affects the sleep-wake cycle. Specifically, astrocytes act on adenosine receptors on neurons. Adenosine is a chemical known to have sleep-inducing effects.

During our waking hours, adenosine accumulates and increases the urge to sleep, known as sleep pressure. Chemicals, such as caffeine, are adenosine receptor antagonists and promote wakefulness. In contrast, an adenosine receptor agonist creates sleepiness.

"In this study, we administered three doses of an adenosine receptor agonist to mice over the course of a night that caused the equivalent of sleep deprivation. The mice slept as normal, but the sleep did not reduce adenosine levels sufficiently, mimicking the effects of sleep deprivation. After only 12 hours, we observed that mice had decreased depressive-like symptoms and increased levels of adenosine in the brain, and these results were sustained for 48 hours," said first author Dustin Hines, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow in the department of neuroscience at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM).

"By manipulating astrocytes we were able to mimic the effects of sleep deprivation on depressive-like symptoms, causing a rapid and sustained improvement in behavior," continued Hines.

"Further understanding of astrocytic signaling and the role of adenosine is important for research and development of anti-depressant drugs. Potentially, new drugs that target this mechanism may provide rapid relief for psychiatric emergencies, as well as long-term alleviation of chronic depressive symptoms," said Naomi Rosenberg, Ph.D., dean of the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and vice dean for research at Tufts University School of Medicine. "The team's next step is to further understand the other receptors in this system and see if they, too, can be affected."

Senior author, Phillip G. Haydon, Ph.D., is the Annetta and Gustav Grisard professor and chair of the department of neuroscience at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM). Haydon is also a member of the neuroscience program faculty at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts.

Additional authors are Luke I. Schmitt, B.S., a Ph.D. candidate in neuroscience at the Sackler School; Rochelle M. Hines, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow in the department of neuroscience at TUSM; and Stephen J. Moss, Ph.D., a professor of neuroscience at Tufts University School of Medicine and a member of the neuroscience program faculty at the Sackler School.
