Bismuth provides perfect dance partners for quantum computing qubits

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2012) ? New research has demonstrated a way to make bismuth electrons and nuclei work together as qubits in a quantum computer.

The discovery, published in Nature Materials, takes us a key step further to creating practical quantum computing which could tackle complex programs that would otherwise take the lifetime of the universe to finish.

The collaboration partners are based in the University of Warwick, UCL, ETH Zurich and the USA Sandia National Labs.

Information on our normal computers is stored as bits, which are either ones or zeros. Quantum bits work differently in that each quantum bit can try out being a one and a zero at the same time, which makes them much more powerful for solving certain problems.

Researchers have explored influencing the direction of spin in electrons to create those states but this approach has had its challenges.

Dr Gavin Morley from the University of Warwick's Department of Physics said: "Bismuth atoms in silicon crystals are great at working as quantum bits. Each bismuth atom has a spare electron, which has a "spin" that can be influenced by magnets.

"If we put the electron into a magnet, it lines up with the magnetic field, behaving like a compass needle.

"We can control the direction that the electron is pointing in, using microwaves. Microwaves let us flip the direction the electron is pointing in, and these "up and down" directions are what constitute the "one and zero" in our quantum bit.

"Unfortunately, our electron is constantly prone to interference from nearby atoms that are out of our control.

"And the more time we waste, the greater the chance that our poor electron will suffer from interference, making it unusable to us."

"Now, this electron is coupled to the bismuth nucleus, which has its own spin: a smaller compass needle. Using this as an extra quantum bit and flipping it at the same time as our electron, would really help out. We can control this smaller compass needle too, but as it's smaller, it takes longer to control, and we need to use radiowaves instead of microwaves to do this."

"The good news is that as it's slow to respond, our bismuth nucleus's smaller compass needle suffers less from interference by nearby rogue atoms than our electron's larger compass needle. Unfortunately in the time we spend controlling our bismuth nucleus, these rogue atoms interfere with our electron."

"However we found that if we reduce the magnetic field just enough, then the electron and the nucleus become hybridized. Our new experiments at ETH Zurich show that through hybridisation, we can flip both compass needles easily using microwaves."

Dr Morley compares it to the magnetic resonance imaging we find in hospitals.

He said: "MRI works by controlling the nuclear spins in your body.

"We have hybridized electron and nuclear spins and found that this makes it easier to control them.

"It's an easy new way to make slow and fast quantum bits work together. There are lots more challenges to face before anyone has a working computer with enough quantum bits to be useful, but with this hybridization as part of a computer's design, we are one step closer."

Broncos, Patriots, Falcons win divisions

On the first weekend of December, four teams made the NFL playoffs.

With four weeks to go in the regular-season, New England owns the AFC East title, Denver has the AFC West and Atlanta won the NFC South.

Houston has not clinched the AFC South, although it has a three-game lead over Indianapolis, but it secured at least a wild-card spot on Sunday.

The Patriots (9-3) beat Miami 23-16 for their sixth straight win. It also was Tom Brady's 10th division title, the most for any quarterback in NFL history.

Denver (9-3) has won seven in a row after defeating Tampa Bay 31-23, and with that loss by the Bucs, the Falcons (11-1) were guaranteed their division title. Atlanta beat New Orleans 23-13 on Thursday night.

The Texans (11-1) beat Tennessee 24-10, but with the Colts (8-4) winning 35-33 at Detroit, the AFC South remains undecided. Houston and Indianapolis meet twice in the last three weeks.

Baltimore (9-3) has a two-game lead on Pittsburgh and Cincinnati in the AFC North, and the Bengals still have both division rivals left on their schedule. The Ravens lost 23-20 to the Steelers on Sunday, while the Bengals won 20-13 at San Diego.

San Francisco's 16-13 loss in overtime at St. Louis tightened up the AFC West as Seattle (7-5) defeated Chicago 23-17 in OT. The 49ers have a 1?-game lead on the Seahawks.

The New York Giants (7-4) entered the weekend up two games up in the NFC East and they face Washington on Monday night.

Green Bay (8-4) and Chicago are tied atop the NFC North. The Packers have beaten the Bears already and they meet Dec. 16 at Soldier Field.

Police identify three dead in bizarre Wyoming murder-suicide

(Reuters) - A Wyoming college professor slain by bow and arrow in his classroom died at the hands of his son, who also killed the woman who shared his father's home before stabbing himself to death, police said on Saturday, a day after the double murder and suicide.

Police also said the father, Jim Krumm, 56, who taught computer science at Casper College, managed to stagger to his feet despite being "mortally wounded" from the arrow shot to his head, and grappled with his son, allowing his students to flee the classroom unharmed.

Authorities found the attacker, Chris Krumm, 25, and his father dead or near death in the third-floor classroom. The son had driven a large knife into his father's chest after they struggled, then stabbed himself numerous times, according to the Casper Police Department.

Authorities later found Heidi Arnold, 42, who taught mathematics at Casper College and lived with the elder Krum, stabbed to death at their home.

Police said she had been slain by the son that morning before he set out for campus.

Chris Krumm arrived at the school armed with a bow-and-arrow weapon called a compound bow - a type of crossbow - and two knives, all wrapped together inside a blanket, police said.

Casper police initially said the victims' injuries were caused by a sharp-edged weapon. They revealed additional details of the slayings in a statement and news conference on Saturday.

"I can't even imagine what the students in that room had gone through," Police Chief Chris Walsh told reporters, explaining that students watched horrified as Chris Krumm stepped into the classroom and unleashed an arrow at his father from his crossbow.

The students had all safely fled the classroom before the final moments of the bloodbath, he said.

Police offered no possible motive for the killings, but the assailant and Arnold knew each other, and the attacks appeared to have been planned in advance.

Walsh said the suspect, who had lived most recently in Vernon, Connecticut, and was not a student of the community college, had come to Casper days earlier and was staying at a local motel.

Jim Krumm was born in England and also lived in Germany while growing up, then attended the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University, where he earned a master's degree in computer science, according to a biography posted on the Casper College website.

Arnold earned a bachelor's degree from the University of California at Davis, and master's of science from the University of Oregon.

Casper College, where some 5,000 students are enrolled, canceled classes for the rest of Friday and made counselors available to students.

Casper, with a population of about 55,000, is the second-largest city in Wyoming after Cheyenne, the state capital.

'Indian real estate market not up to global standards' | Firstpost

Foreign investors are being cautious about the Indian real estate market because it fails to meet the global standards, says Sean Tompkins, global chief executive officer of UK-based Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

According to a report in The Economic Times, Tompkins has said that since 2005 Indian realty has not delivered the promise of being an attractive investment destination.

The sector had witnessed close to $20 billion in investment between 2006 and 2009. Of this, only about $2-3 billion has been able to exit as yet, after remaining invested for six-long years.

Soaring land prices and buyers? resistance to price increases have narrowed investors? margins significantly. Agencies

An earlier Firstpost article had said that PE firms that invested in the Indian realty in the 2006-08 boom years are looking to exit, but are unable to so with profitable returns.

Quoting sources, the report said heads were rolling at the top levels of these firms as a fallout of the failed investments.

Soaring land prices and buyers? resistance to price increases have narrowed investors? margins significantly.

While many PE funds have postponed their plans to exit investments due to lower returns a few cash-rich ones are treading cautiously and avoiding investing anywhere as valuations have dropped

According to Tompkins, to attract more investments it is imperative to create the right conditions to an investor comfortable.

For this, India should treat real estate and construction as a proper profession like in the West if it has to rise to global standards.
